8 Inspirational Books To Read During Your Self Love Journey - Image Of A Woman Reading A Book

As we at Chillion Dollars are all about preaching "More Self Love!"💕, in the first official blog post for Chillion Dollars I am going to be sharing a list of my TOP 8 favorite personal development books that have been a big part of my self growth and self love journey so far 🙌🏼

To be completely honest - I absolutely love all the self help, self love and personal development books I can get my hands on! That is all I read these days, no jokes!

I recently heard something about self help and personal development books ”hooking” you up and becoming “addictive” in a way, and, well, judging from my experience - I guess it's true.

But hey - if you ask me - reading books about personal development & self love is really not the worst addiction to have! Pass me the next one as I am not planning to quit anytime soon! 📚

So why do I enjoy reading these types of books so much?

These books are a source of positivity and inspiration.

Whenever I read personal development and self help books, they always make me feel very happy, uplifted and inspired. These books are usually filled with a lot of positive, nourishing information and you often find great quotes that you want to write down so you wouldn't forget them.

They help me refresh the way I think & they help me understand life from a bigger perspective.

Some of these books are pure magic!✨ They have made me understand life just a tiny bit more, understand myself a bit more and have given me a whole new outlook on what life is all about.

I especially enjoy reading other people stories from real life and learning about the experiences that have shaped their beliefs and shaped them into who they are today. I really believe that all of us are constantly growing as personalities and our views and beliefs are changing as we go through life.

Sometimes the right book finds me at the right time.

Many books that I have read have helped me overcome whatever it might have been that I was going through at that particular moment. Some books have helped me get through rough break-ups and shattered dreams, some have taught me to pick up healthy habits and “growth mindset”🌱  in order to reach my goals.

And that, in my opinion, is one of the best aspects of reading books in general - getting to apply the knowledge and insights that you have read to your own personal life and journey.

So whether you’re seeking advice on how to live a more fulfilling life, want to know how to mend a broken heart, get healthy, or work on your mindset - there is something on this list of books for everybody.

All these books will help you out in one way or another, and maybe they will make you think about how you can change your life to become the person you have always wanted to be!

Without further ado, let’s get into the list of 8 BOOKS FOR understanding LIFE, SELF LOVE, and inspiring PERSONAL GROWTH.

        1. "The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment" by Eckhart Tolle

Book Cover The Power Of Now By Eckhart Tolle Book Cover

"The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment" by Eckhart Tolle was one of those special books that entered my life at the perfect time and helped me go through a very rough patch I was dealing with at that time.

For about 8 months I had worked very hard for a quite ambitious personal goal I had set for myself at the time. In order to make it happen, I also had to save up quite a large amount of money, which meant that I had to work a lot and “sacrifice” some of the everyday “extras” I was used to having before.

Every day for about 8 months I would wake up and work like crazy, I took no days off and just hustled like I had never done it before 💪🏼

Yes, I was super determined - all I could think about was that goal and how the day will come when I finally accomplish it. I admit - I was very tired both emotionally & physically, but when you have a strong goal and vision, it seems like there is nothing that will stop you from getting where you want to be.

But then… Guess what? Life stopped me. Literally. It stopped me, pushed me down and walked all over me. I was so close, but there was no way to make my goal happen.

No Plan B. No way around it. Life crushed one of my biggest dreams and I was left broken in a million pieces 🥺

For a very long time I could not understand it. I didn't want to accept the reality of my dream being shattered. I had worked so, so hard to make it happen, but then in one day my dream was gone and all that ridiculous amount of work I had put into that goal was wasted…

At least that is how I saw it at that time. I was angry at life, at the universe, at people - I was angry at everything! And I was crying a lot. For days. Couldn't keep it together. It felt like someone close to me had died. I had lost my dream and it hurt like hell.

In order to deal with my “loss”, I packed my bags and went to live on a yoga retreat on top of a cliff overlooking some of New Zealand's 🌿  finest beaches (yes, I was living in beautiful NZ at the time). I felt the need to be close to nature in order to heal and process everything that had happened. One small step at a time.

And that is exactly when E. Tolle's book “Power Of The Now” came into my life. And honestly - this book changed my life and forever transformed the way I think.

I don't want to get into detail about what this book is about, as I honestly think everyone should read it and interpret it in their own way.

As for me - this book helped me heal. It made me understand why things happen the way they do… But most importantly - it made me realize that for more than 8 months I had not been living “In The Now”, but somewhere in the future…

         2. "Single On Purpose: Redefine Everything. Find Yourself First." by John Kim

Book Cover Of Single On Purpose: Redefine Everything. Find Yourself First. by John Kim

I got "Single On Purpose: Redefine Everything. Find Yourself First." shortly after breaking up with my partner. After 1.5 years of being in a relationship, I was single, broken-hearted 💔 and had lost myself somewhere along the way. It was time to find myself. Again.

Although this time the book “didn't come into my life” - I went and got it myself, it was just what I needed while going through a rough break-up that I had to process in order to move on. I also had to adapt and embrace my new relationship status - being single or how I like to call it - "dating myself".

You see we often view being single in a negative light, to the point of staying in bad relationships just to avoid this "label". But John Kim manages to show a way to make being single a purposeful growth experience. One that is more likely to help us end up in a healthy and fulfilling relationship, should that be what we are looking for.

The topic of knowing yourself, being in touch with yourself, dropping into your body, living and experiencing life, is super important. To be clear - It is one of the most important life lessons you'll ever learn! You really have to build a relationship with yourself first. As easy (but actually super hard) as it sounds - you have to learn how to truly and unconditionally LOVE YOURSELF ❤️. Period.

So for anyone going through a break-up or anyone wondering why they haven't met the “right” person - read through this book and I am sure you will come to understand that maybe it is better to use the time being single to build a better relationship with yourself! And it will be totally worth it! 💯

        3. "The Art of Happiness: A Handbook for Living" by Dalai Lama and Howard C. Cutler, M.D.

Book cover Of The Art of Happiness: A Handbook for Living by Dalai Lama and Howard C. Cutler, M.D.

From day to day we find ourselves in this never ending quest trying to master the “art of happiness” and searching for the missing components to live a happier and more fulfilling life.

However, we often forget that happiness is a journey, not a destination. Happiness is to be found along the way, not at the end of the road, for then the journey is over and it's simply too late.

This book will forever be one of my favorites 😍  It offers you a great privilege and let's you get a glimpse into the mind of one of the greatest spiritual leaders of our time - His Holiness The Dalai Lama.

The Dalai Lama's wisdom is clear, simple, and practical. He addresses many issues that we all face in daily life.

Following his wisdom, you can eliminate any self-sabotage and self-created annoyances in life, it also teaches you how to cope with the suffering that we all inevitably experience in life.

"The Art of Happiness: A Handbook for Living" helps you to stop holding grudges, be more empathetic and understand that we're all just humans at the end of the day. It's a great read for anyone, you just need to be willing to open your mind!

        4. "Girlboss" by Sophia Amoruso

Book Cover of Girlboss by Sophia Amoruso

Although I would like to note that "Girlboss" by Sophia Amoruso is “light read” book that could be more appealing to a younger audience (teenagers and young-adults, especially women), I still thoroughly enjoyed reading it!

Sophia Amoruso (the outhor of this book and the founder of fashion retail company “Nasty Gal”) is a GirlBoss to the bone! ⚡

I guess what made me relate to her in a very big way was that she didn’t give a s*** about what anyone thought of her! She lived life on her own terms and started a successful business even though it wasn’t really her intention in the first place.

As a person who has always felt like the “odd ball out” and as someone who absolutely hates the idea of working for anyone else than myself - this book helped me realize that living differently is possible! 🙌🏼

It's not going to be easy, it's not going to happen quickly - but if you put your heart and soul into whatever it is that you are doing - you will succeed! A perfect quote from the book to sum it up - "fortune favors the bold who get sh** done".

        5. "Letting Go: The Pathway of Surrender" by David R. Hawkins M.D. Ph.D

Book Cover of Letting Go: The Pathway of Surrender by David R. Hawkins M.D. Ph.D

Sometimes the simplest truths are the most powerful and impactful ones, which is definitely the case when it comes to the main lessons of this book.

I started reading "Letting Go: The Pathway of Surrender" during a time I felt very depressed and apathetic. I was going through a lot of emotional trauma and often felt overwhelmed by the amount of sadness and pain inside of me.

Life felt hard and I hated many aspects of it. All I wanted was not to feel the way I did, even feeling nothing seemed like a good deal at that time. Thus, I turned to this book in hopes of figuring out how to do it 🤔

Right from the very beginning the book struck a cord with me as the author described all the desperate things people do in order to avoid dealing with their feelings and emotions.

Ouuuu yes - I could definitely check off most of the things on that list, as I also thought that these were the “magic cure” for my sadness and unhappiness. With no doubt - when it comes to dealing with negative emotions, we are always looking for the "fastest way out".

But in reality suppressing and avoiding emotions is just an “easy short-term fix”. You don't really deal with the feelings and emotions, you try to “hide them”, “put them away” -”out of sight, out of mind” type of thing. And although doing that might make you feel a bit better at the time, doing so will actually harm you and hurt you even more in the long run 👎🏼

You see sooner or later all the suppressed emotions need to come out. Usually it happens after encountering a “trigger”.

Jap - that is when “the shit hits the fan”. All your suppressed emotions and feelings are released on you all at once. It is not pretty and it is much more difficult to clean up the emotional mess afterwards.

So how to avoid “shit hitting the fan” when it comes to feelings and emotions in your life? How to avoid suffering that we all inevitably have to face at some point in our lives?

The answer is very easy - you just need to learn how to correctly process and let go of your emotions.

You might think you know how to do it, but if you find yourself overwhelmed by emotions or often feeling sad or angry out of nowhere - maybe you still need to learn a thing or two about letting go! And guess what - this book will do just that - open your eyes and give you great practical advice on exactly how to do it! Highly recommend! 🙌🏼

        6. "The Top Five Regrets of the Dying: A Life Transformed by the Dearly Departing" by Bronnie Ware

Book Cover of The Top Five Regrets of the Dying: A Life Transformed by the Dearly Departing by Bronnie Ware

Although "The Top Five Regrets of the Dying" is not in any way backed by credible research or scientific evidence, it still brings up a lot of valuable advice and “food for thought” 🧠

Australian author Bronnie Ware worked as a caregiver for the dying, and the people she cared for knew that they didn't have a lot of time left.

They were at the end of their journeys. They had to come to terms with what had happened in their lives that they wished hadn't, or what hadn't happened that they wished had.

Same regrets came up over and over from those she cared for, thus, she shares her story about the lessons she learned from those nearing their death.

The story implores the reader, especially young readers, to realize that what you think you will regret when you are young is not what you will eventually come to regret later in life.

Understanding that is essential as it will impact the life choices you make for yourself today.

True freedom is available to us all, but it often takes diligent effort to clean out the things that block out the sunlight and don't serve our higher purpose in life. Appreciate the time you have been given on this planet and live a life with no regrets! 😌

        7. "The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari: A Fable About Fulfilling Your Dreams & Reaching Your Destiny" by Robin Sharma

Book Cover Of The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari: A Fable About Fulfilling Your Dreams & Reaching Your Destiny by Robin Sharma

When it comes to new age spirituality and self improvement books - Robin Sharma is an absolute legend. All of his books have become international best-sellers and now have been translated to more than 70 languages 📚

Apart from that Robin Sharma is also a well known motivational speaker and considered as one of the world's premier thinkers on leadership, personal growth and life management.

Brilliantly blending the timeless spiritual wisdom of the East with the cutting-edge success principles of the West, Robin Sharma has shown millions of people around the world how to live with greater courage, balance, abundance and joy. His book "The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari" is no exception 🏎️

I found this book to bring the recipe for meaningful life into a compact story that clearly explains not only the ingredients for that life, but also exactly how to combine them in order to create the happiness for which you have been searching all along.

This book was actually one of the first “self-development” books I ever read and I still re-read it from time to time whenever I feel a bit “stuck” in life or business. Very easy to read and I highly recommend it!

        8. Vibrate Higher Daily: Live Your Power by Lalah Delia

Vibrate Higher Daily: Live Your Power by Lalah Delia

Science shows us that everything is made up of energy ✨ It's in the building block of all matter. The same energy that composes your body is also the one that makes up bricks of the house you live in. Your car, phone, animals, trees, you name it, are all composed of energy.

Undeniably - also our thoughts, feelings and emotions are energy too. Everybody feels the effect of vibrations, and everyone is vibration. As said by the author: “Vibration is the constant bridge of communication between the mind, body, spirit, and outer world."

As you become more aware of and in tune with your vibration, your life begins to harmonize.

Why is it important? Because living in harmony with your highest good creates greater peace of mind, improved health, healthy relationships and more compassion, joy and love in the world around us. And isn't that something we all have been longing for? 🙌🏼

The author of Vibrate Higher Daily: Live Your Power goes into detail of how to raise your vibration and how to make the changes necessary to address the issues that stand in the way of elevating.

By transforming your thought patterns, environment around you, daily habits and becoming more mindful - you will be on your way to vibrating higher in no time!

Although this list could go on and on - these are my TOP 8 book picks for you today!  These were the books that popped into my mind when I decided to create this list, and these are all books I tend to come back to from time to time. Happy reading, everyone! ✌🏼
